Rose wine created from 100% Garnacha from two tiny 70+ year old vineyards near Navatalgordo.
Los Arquitones is the neighborhood where Guzmán’s family is from, a hike outside of modern-day Villanueva into the Sierra. There are no vineyards nowadays in Los Arquitones, but Bárbara and Guzmán make still and sparkling rosés in homage to his family’s roots. This rosé pet nat is 100% Garnacha from two small 70-year-old, organically-farmed vineyards planted on granitic sandy soils at 900-950 meters altitude in the neighboring village of Navatalgordo.
The grapes were harvested in early September, destemmed, pressed directly, fermented with native yeasts, then bottled before fermentation completed in order to spur bubbles in the ancestral method, as fermentation finished in the bottle. Bárbara and Guzmán believe a full year on the lees is required to achieve a refined bubble, and they disgorged the bottles on December 10th, 2022. Disgorging is rare in pet nat production, but Bárbara and Guzmán believe it is vital to the clearest, fullest expression of the wine.
The 2021 Burbujas de Arquitón is a new pétillant naturel sparkling rosé produced from Garnacha. Following the ancestral method, it finished fermenting in bottle, where it matured with lees for some 18 months in search of finer bubbles. It was disgorged in January 2023. It has a salmon-rosé color and an expressive nose with some yeasty notes and hints of rose petals. The palate is tasty and balanced, with a dry and supple finish. This is not a style allowed by the Cebreros appellation; therefore, the wine is sold as generic wine from Spain. Only 600 bottles produced.
Very pale, salmon colored, with a palate that leans more floral and citrusy than anything fruity or berry-inflected. It's herbaceous, with a refreshing grassy note. a little bit grassy.
